Class C operator training for NJ gas stations

Clerks are often the first people who see an alarm. They need a simple playbook.

What Class C operators do

Class C operators are the first line of response for emergencies and alarms related to the UST system. They typically control or monitor fuel dispensing and know how to notify the Class A/B operator and emergency responders.

When they must be trained

Class C operators must be trained before they assume responsibility for responding to emergencies. New hires who will work the console should not figure it out on night shift with no training record.

What good Class C training covers

  • What alarms mean (and what not to ignore)
  • Spill / release first actions
  • Who to call and in what order
  • When to stop dispensing
  • Where emergency info is posted
UST NJ includes Class C training in program management and can retrain when staff turns over.

Records

Keep training records (who, when, trainer, what was covered). DEP can ask to see them.
