Option A — You (or an employee) get certified
Pros: Knowledge in-house; no monthly operator fee; good if you love compliance and have a stable manager.
Cons: Required training + hard exam; study time; when that person quits you restart; multi-site still needs a real program; Class C training still on you.
Option B — Hire UST NJ
Pros: Fast designation path; works across many NJ sites; staff turnover doesn’t kill the A/B line; Class C training included; you buy time.
Cons: Monthly cost; you still own legal responsibility; you must still fix equipment with certified testers; you need a vendor who answers the phone.
UST NJ’s bias (said out loud): If tanks are not your passion and you have one or more busy sites, hiring is usually the rational move. If you’re hands-on single-site and enjoy the material, DIY can work — just don’t skip Class C and records.
Decision shortcuts
- Hire UST NJ if multi-site, high turnover, or zero interest in the ICC exam
- DIY if single site, stable technical manager, full in-house control
- Hybrid: hire now, certify later if you want
