Quick checklist
- Do you operate a retail gas station in New Jersey?
- Do you have underground fuel tanks for fleet, card-lock, or commercial fueling?
- Is the site registered (or should it be) with NJDEP as a UST facility?
- Do you have a regulated emergency generator UST?
- Has anyone mentioned Class A, B, or C operators on your registration?
- Did a previous manager “handle tanks” and then leave?
If several of those are true, you need Class A, B, and C operators under New Jersey’s operator training rules.
Common misconception: “We don’t sell gas to the public, so this doesn’t apply.” Not always true. Fleet yards, card-locks, and some generator tanks can still be regulated USTs.
Signs you’re already late
- Nobody knows whose name is on the Facility Certification Questionnaire
- Registration is pending or deliveries have been blocked
- No Class C training records for clerks
- Alarms are “just reset” with no written process
- You’re buying/selling a site and due diligence flagged operator gaps
